The media player is a way to avoid having to keep the ever increasing stack of disks by the TV/Stereo. More importantly, if one has kids, it avoids the financial and time-consuming impact of tiny hands destroying your DVDs during handling.
After a horrible experience with a Western Digital HDTV unit purchased in July of 09 I was more than a bit tentative about buying this product. WD HDTV turned out to be betaware that would not play my movies and which exhibited lengthy freezes and control problems on the video it would play. The Oplay! product seemed like it was just what I needed so I decided to purchase through Walmart because of their excellent return policy.
However, what's not to like with the Oplay? It plays all my movies (ISO and VIDEO TS folder structures) without a hitch. The image that hits my Sony Bravia is bright, crisp, & clear the way I like it. The Oplay supports 1080p, normal & widescreen video.
The remote is reasonably fast and responsive and the unit does not take a long time to deal with my 1 TB USB drive. The Oplay is also supposed to support eSata. I may evaluate that at some future date but, frankly, it works so well with the USB port that it is not a priority.
One note: I have not had the unit a long period of time and have not used it yet for either pictures or music. Given its performance in the video arena I don't expect a problem there but will certainly update this review for completeness if I find a problem.
Have not tried the network feature either, though it might be additionally attractive from a kid-proofing POV (even leaving the USB drive out where it is exposed to handling does not seem a good idea to me).
A minor downer: as another reviewer pointed out - only one USB drive can be accessed at a time. But with ever larger USB drives this doesn't seem awful. And there is always the network option as a possibility.

Complicated to set up. You need to update firmware and their web site is always down (They say due to "vast number of connections"... WTF?). I wish I could send it back. Spend a few bucks more and buy some other product. This is Taiwanese company but everything looks and feels like Made in China Sh__t.

So I have a receiver with projector in my living room with an HDMI switch as well. But even though it's supposed to be a 1080i/p product it could never create a usable video signal unless I plugged it directly into the projector (no sound anyone?). So after trying every update and combination of cables/ports I gave up and put it in the bedroom on the LCD TV. So it managed to work in 1080i there so I figured I was all good. But once I connected it to the network it couldn't log into my Vista workstation to stream video/music.
Since then I picked up a Datage HD Pro (can't seem to find it on amazon yet) and it worked with everything right out of the box. So I'm gonna go see how to best destroy an O!Play with power tools, might even post it on YouTube. :)

I have been looking for such a device for a while and unsuccessfully tried many products from DLINK, NETGEAR or other network component vendor and I am glad that Asus finaly got in the game being a big Asus fan for my mobos.
This device plays almost everything! divx, xvid, h264, .ts, .m2ts and even an iso file of a DVD and it is very fast. Installation is very simple as long as you have network connectivity next to your TV, network discovery worked immediately and I was able to watch my movies in less than 2 minutes.
I updated to the latest firmware from the Asus web site (very easy process) which now brings uPnP capabilities to discover sahred media on the network. I had a couple of "freeze" but I am certain that they will be fixed in a future firmware, also sometimes I have an "invalid file" message on a file I played the day before, everything is back to normal after a reset.
I am so happy with it that I immediately bought a second one, at $99 it is really a good deal.
Pros:
- plays everything
- easy to install and to use
- HDMI + Digital optical output
Cons:
- no wireless network interface
- no component output which could have been useful to connect to a non HDMI TV
I would definitely recommend it as it is exactly what I was looking for.
